How we ranked these hotels

17 hotels looked at for this destination: 11 ranked above, 6 more we recommend.

The Google and Booking ratings for these hotels are based on a combined 47,210 reviews reported by the sources. This is not the number of review texts Tripplo has analysed.

Read our methodology

Where to stay in Amsterdam?

Areas drawn from our hotels' addresses — updated as the selection changes.

Canal Ring

Best for First-time visitors

This UNESCO-listed historic core features 17th-century waterways lined with grand merchant houses, boutique shops, and cosy cafes. It offers a quieter, highly picturesque base within easy walking distance of major sights.

City Centre

Best for Central sightseeing

The historic heart of Amsterdam includes Dam Square and the medieval centre, putting visitors close to the Royal Palace and central transport hubs. It is bustling, highly commercial, and always active.

Oud-Zuid and De Pijp

Best for Museums and galleries

Home to the world-renowned Museumplein and the trendy streets of De Pijp, this elegant southern district offers high-end shopping and diverse dining options. It has a more residential feel with excellent green spaces like the Vondelpark nearby.

Amsterdam-Oost

Best for A quieter local vibe

Characterised by wide streets, grand 19th-century architecture, and the expansive Oosterpark, this area lies just east of the central canals. It is known for its excellent culinary scene and relaxed, neighborhood feel.

Areas to consider

Visitors looking for a peaceful stay may wish to avoid hotels located directly in the Red Light District (De Wallen) or immediately adjacent to Dam Square, where heavy tourist crowds and late-night noise are common.

Each bar shows how a hotel's nightly price moved over the period, leaving out the most unusual days. The marker is its typical price.

Every hotel counts once, at its own typical price, so hotels we happened to check more often don't carry more weight. Prices are the lowest rate available for the whole stay, worked out per night in euros.

How we chose these hotels

At our latest review (August 2026) the properties listed above were measured against the same standard: sustained guest scores on both Booking.com and Google — weighted by how many reviews sit behind them — five-star class or an equivalent premium level, a genuinely first-rate location, and facilities that set the hotel apart.

As a guideline we look for around 8.5 or higher on Booking.com, but no single number decides on its own — when the sources disagree, the broader evidence wins. Guest scores on this page update continuously, and the selection is re-reviewed at regular intervals. The full standard is described in how we choose hotels.

Frequently Asked Questions

For the classic postcard setting, choose the canal belt: Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is on the Herengracht, The Dylan on the Keizersgracht and Pulitzer Amsterdam in the Nine Streets. Dam Square puts you in the middle of everything, with Hotel TwentySeven and Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky overlooking it, while De L’Europe and InterContinental Amstel sit on the Amstel river. Quieter options include Hotel Okura in De Pijp and Pillows Grand Boutique Hotel Maurits at the Park beside Oosterpark.

Pulitzer Amsterdam spreads across twenty-five interconnected canal houses in the Nine Streets, with inner gardens and its own salon boat. Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam occupies six 17th-century canal palaces on the Herengracht, with private gardens and a Guerlain spa. The Dylan is set in a 17th-century building on the Keizersgracht, arranged around a private courtyard.

Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium is in the Museum Quarter, within walking distance of the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk on Museumplein. From most of the canal-belt hotels, the museums are a pleasant walk or a short tram ride away.

Amsterdam has a mild maritime climate, and rain is possible in any month. Late spring and summer bring the longest days and the most time on terraces and the canals, while April and May are tulip season. Winter is cold and grey but quieter — a good time for museums and the hotels' spas.

Direct trains run from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal in around 15 to 20 minutes, and from there it is a short walk to Dam Square and the hotels around it. Taxis are the easier option with luggage if you are staying further out, for example in the Museum Quarter, De Pijp or by Oosterpark.
