Berghotel Schmittenhöhe

4-Star Hotel
Berghotel Schmittenhöhe stands at 2,000 metres on the summit of the Schmittenhöhe above Zell am See, right next to the mountain station of the Schmittenhöhebahn cable car. In winter the pistes start at the door, and in summer hiking trails lead off in every direction. The hotel can only be reached by cable car, which runs during the day only; in winter one ride up on arrival and one down on departure are included, while ski and hiking tickets are bought at the valley station. The rooms were renovated in 2018, look out over the mountains and most have a balcony. The 330 m² spa has several saunas, a fitness room, a sunbed and a massage bed, and bathrobes are provided. There are three restaurants, a large sun terrace with panoramic views and the SchnapsHans bar for après-ski. From the valley station, a free ski bus reaches the centre of Zell am See in five minutes, and the ski pass is also valid in Kaprun, 8 km away.

Tripplo’s hotel summary

Tripplo’s analysis · Updated 20 October 2026 · How we review hotels

Berghotel Schmittenhöhe is about the location. It stands at 2,000 metres beside the top station of the Schmittenhöhebahn, so in winter you can ski from the door after breakfast and in summer walk straight onto hiking trails, with views down to Zell am See. Guests praise the staff, the dinners and the rooms, renovated in 2018, and the spa with its saunas is often quiet. Dog owners feel welcome, and in a summer heatwave the altitude is a relief. Life on the summit has its rules. The hotel can only be reached by cable car, which runs during the day only, so evenings in town are not really an option and arrival times need planning. Some guests found the mattresses soft and the breakfast average, and the fitness room is small. Skiers and hikers who want to wake up on the mountain will love it; those who want restaurants on the doorstep should stay in town.

A mountain hotel at 2,000 metres on the Schmittenhöhe, with skiing from the door in winter, hiking trails in summer and views over Zell am See. It suits skiers and walkers who want to wake up on the mountain, less so guests who want to pop down into town in the evening.

Guests score it 9.3 out of 10 — the average across the 8 hotels we list in Zell am See–Kaprun is 9.1.

  • The location is what guests talk about first: views over the mountains and down to Zell am See, a peaceful atmosphere and, in summer, cooler air than in the valley.
  • The hotel sits next to the top station of the Schmittenhöhebahn, so in winter you can put your boots on after breakfast and ski off. In summer, hiking trails start right outside.
