Tripplo’s analysis · Updated 20 October 2026 · How we review hotels

The Chania Hotel Crete sits in Chania Town, a short walk from the Venetian harbour and the old town. Guests praise the rooms, the breakfast and the position. It is a town hotel: there is no beach, and the square outside is busy by day.

A five-star city hotel on 1866 Square in Chania, minutes from the Venetian harbour, with an indoor pool and a Greek restaurant. Best for travellers who want the old town rather than a beach resort.

Guests score it 9.3 out of 10 — the average across the 53 hotels we list on Crete is 9.1.

  • The Venetian harbour is about 700 m away and the Etz Hayyim Synagogue about 400 m, so the old town is easy to explore on foot.
  • The indoor pool, plunge pool and fitness centre let guests swim and train even when the weather turns cooler.

“We had a wonderful dining experience at the restaurant of The Chania Hotel. We didn’t stay at the hotel unfortunately but we are planning to go next year, which was beautiful, but we went to their restaurant that we truly recommend, you can find it on their website! Every dish was exceptional—beautifully presented, full of flavor, and prepared with high-quality, fresh ingredients. You can really tell that great care and passion go into both the cuisine and the overall experience. What made our evening even more memorable was the outstanding service. A very special thank you to Iralis, who welcomed us with genuine kindness, professionalism, and warmth from the very first moment. He made us feel truly valued as guests, and his attention to detail and friendly attitude elevated the entire experience. Thank you to the whole team for such a fantastic evening. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Chania and will definitely be back on our next trip to Crete!”

“This hotel is truly special! The staff is always friendly and helpful. The complimentary breakfast has wonderful options for healthy meals (fresh fruit, yogurt, boiled eggs) and several options that the kids love (even flavored waffles!), along with the usual staples (bagels, cereal, scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, etc). The coffee is delicious and there are hot tea and fruit juices, as well. Throughout the day, soda and flavored water is available, and late-afternoon snacks are also available. This hotel feels like a home away from home! The rooms are always clean and tidy, and every need has been provided for. The staff texts throughout our stay and always leaves a note for us. It’s truly the finest in customer service, and I haven’t found a more customer-friendly hotel yet! One more thing: If you have a larger family (more than 4 people), it can be hard to find accommodations that won’t break the bank. This hotel has rooms that easily accommodate larger families at a very reasonable price! The sofa bed is fantastic!”

“We had a wonderful stay at this hotel in Chania and would happily return. The décor throughout the hotel was absolutely superb — stylish, elegant, and beautifully done, creating a really lovely atmosphere from the moment we arrived. The breakfast was fantastic, with a great variety of delicious options and everything fresh and beautifully presented. It was definitely one of the highlights of our stay. The location is just perfect, ideally situated for exploring Chania and enjoying everything the area has to offer. It made getting around so easy. The only small downside was that we could hear tv noise at night from the other room, but it didn’t take away from what was otherwise a really lovely experience. Overall, a fantastic hotel in a perfect location, with beautiful décor and an excellent breakfast. Highly recommended.”

“Stayed in The Chania Hotel for one night to start off our stay in Crete, and loved it. I am IHG Platinum and had emailed the hotel beforehand requesting an upgrade - they very kindly upgraded us several categories to a top floor suite with a standalone bathtub, which was honestly one of the best hotel rooms I’ve stayed in for a while. Spacious, high ceilings, very comfortable bed, great bathtub with bubbles, walk in shower, two separate sinks, a balcony, work area with a view, and the very nice touch of a real orchid in the bathroom. The breakfast was small but thoughtful with local products and the breakfast area has a great view. The gym is small but functional and is on its own floor. The pool on first inspection looks like it’s in a bizarre location because it’s right behind the breakfast area, but it doesn’t open until after breakfast so it’s not an issue and for a city centre hotel like this, it’s a nice addition. The valet service is honestly much appreciated because in Chania parking is limited and expensive, so €15/day was well worth it for our car to be brought around. And one of the best things is the location - super easy walk to the Chania harbour less than 10 minutes away. Overall 5 star experience, would not hesitate to book again!”

“Great value for money! The location is perfect, close to everything (bus, old center, beach) The hotel room was clean, spacious and comfortable. We were greeted at check-in with some fresh orange juice from the hotel bar, which was great. The breakfast was amazing, a lot of options for everyone. The staff was super helpful and friendly and answered quickly to our request and questions.”
