Tripplo’s hotel summary

Tripplo’s analysis · Updated 22 October 2026 · How we review hotels

Stockholm Stadshotell suits travellers who care about design, craftsmanship and good food. The 1875 building on Södermalm holds 32 individually styled rooms and suites, a lively bistro, a more intimate dining room in the former chapel, a cocktail bar and a courtyard used for summer dining. Wellness, however, is limited to a bookable sauna with cold plunge, and the entry-level rooms are compact.

Stockholm Stadshotell fills an 1875 heritage building on Södermalm, commissioned by Queen Dowager Josefina, with 32 individually designed rooms and suites. Swedish craftsmanship sets the tone – burled birch headboards, pine floors and marble bathrooms – while two restaurants, a cocktail bar and a bookable sauna with cold plunge round out the stay. It suits travellers who put design and dining first.

Guests score it 9.4 out of 10 — the average across the 9 hotels we list in Stockholm is 9.1.

  • The hotel occupies a building completed in 1875, commissioned by Queen Dowager Josefina in memory of King Oscar I. Its sandstone-coloured façades and former church hall give it a palatial character, and it holds the City of Stockholm Museum's highest heritage classification.
  • No two of the 32 rooms and suites are alike. Burled birch headboards, Swedish pine floors and hand-tufted rugs meet DUX beds and bathrooms in Italian Perlino marble, Kinnekulle limestone or Swedish Ekeberg marble.

“This was my third time visiting Stockholm, but my first time staying at the Stockholm Stadshotell..and it was easily my best experience in the city to date. The hotel felt like a true home away from home, largely thanks to the incredibly welcoming staff who went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. Everything was spotlessly clean, and the bed was exceptionally comfortable, ensuring a great night's sleep. The amenities were top-notch; the sauna was absolutely amazing, and both the breakfast and dinner options were delicious. The location is also fantastic and very convenient. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about my stay and will definitely be returning. Highly recommended!”

“Staff are friendly, responsive, and competent. The building is well restored and well maintained. Beds are divine. Service is excellent. Where it falls short: noise, amenity access and location. Hallway doors begin slamming in the early hours and continue for hours each morning — loud enough to be heard clearly from inside the room. The sauna was effectively unbookable; despite a four-night stay, I never found a slot. Most concerning: the door locks use decorative fobs that are cumbersome enough that the front desk offers to hold your key for you. Each time I retrieved the key, staff simply handed it over with no ID check, including from employees who had never seen me before and had no way of recognizing me. An aesthetic object is a design choice; handing a room key to anyone who asks for it is a security failure and will become an issue at some point.”

“Wonderful facilities and fantastic location. Staff was always friendly and knowledgeable, made our first experience in Stockholm delightful. Booked with AMEX Fine Hotels and no issues with benefits. As a bonus, the sauna/plunge was such a memorable experience and added bonus. Would highly recommend!”

“I wish I was still there. The whole experience staying here was impeccable. There are so many details. The building, the design, the lightning, the wooden floors, the carpets, the beds(!), the food...the neighborhood, the vibe! and most importantly the wonderful people working there (Lydia, Helena....) your attention was so special. I felt really really happy there and cannot wait to come back. Thank you 💚”
