Tripplo’s hotel summary

Tripplo’s analysis · Updated 20 October 2026 · How we review hotels

Lugger Hotel is made for travellers who want Cornwall at its most intimate. The 17th-century inn sits at the water's edge in Portloe, a tiny fishing village on the Roseland Peninsula, and its rooms are spread across three buildings around the harbour, which keeps the place calm even in high summer. Guests return again and again to the setting, the staff and the food, with breakfast and dinner both served looking out over the boats and the sea. The small scale also brings the main trade-offs. Some rooms are compact, a few are close to public areas or below another room, and the car park struggles with larger cars when the hotel is full. Over a longer stay the dinner menu can feel limited, and some guests find the evening prices high. Couples and coast-path walkers will find a peaceful, personal base; anyone who needs space to spread out should look for a larger house.

A 17th-century inn on the harbour at Portloe, with individually decorated rooms in three buildings and a harbour-view restaurant serving local seafood. It suits couples and coast-path walkers who want a quiet, intimate hideaway by the sea, less so anyone who needs a large room or easy parking.

Guests score it 9.0 out of 10 — the average across the 9 hotels we list in Cornwall is 9.0.

  • The hotel sits at the water's edge in a tiny fishing village, with working boats in the harbour below and views from almost every window. Guests describe the setting as unique, and some head straight into the sea for a swim after checking in.
  • The staff are praised in review after review for a warm welcome and for making guests feel looked after; several say that nothing was too much trouble, and the breakfast team are remembered for their good cheer.
