Tripplo’s hotel summary

Tripplo’s analysis · Updated 21 October 2026 · How we review hotels

Hotel Royal is best for culture-seeking travellers who appreciate historic heritage. It features historic 1838 Neoclassical architecture, an on-site casino, and an extensive collection of 300 artworks alongside authentic antique room furnishings. However, the hotel has modest fitness centre equipment, and some guests may find navigating the narrow historic corridors a bit restrictive.

Hotel Royal is a landmark Neoclassical property in Aarhus that prioritizes heritage and art. Established in 1838, it combines a museum-like atmosphere with an on-site casino, making it a suitable choice for travelers seeking historic character over modern minimalism.
  • The building dates to 1838, retaining original Neoclassical features like stained glass and glass chandeliers. This architectural integrity provides an immersive historical atmosphere often missing in modern chain hotels.
  • The interior serves as a private gallery with over 300 curated art pieces distributed throughout the property. This focus on visual culture adds a layer of sophistication and personality to the guest experience.

“⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Outstanding Family Stay at Hotel Royal We recently stayed at Hotel Royal with our family and had a truly wonderful experience. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the excellent service, warm atmosphere, and genuine care shown by the staff. A special and heartfelt thank you goes to "Miss Marie Sofie Madsen", whose kindness, professionalism, and dedication made our stay unforgettable. When our son unfortunately had an accident during our trip, she went above and beyond to help us arrange medical assistance and ensure that everything was handled smoothly. Her compassion and support during a stressful situation meant so much to our family, and we will always be grateful for her exceptional care. We would also like to recognise the valet parking staff member, who was consistently friendly, professional, and incredibly helpful. His positive attitude and willingness to assist at any time greatly enhanced our overall experience and deserve special appreciation. The restaurant team and management also deserve special recognition. The ambience of the restaurant was exceptional and every member of the staff was welcoming, attentive, and eager to ensure that guests had a memorable dining experience. Their professionalism and genuine friendliness created a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout our stay. The hotel's atmosphere and facilities were excellent. We especially enjoyed the open-bar and lounge area, which created a lovely and relaxing environment. Overall, Hotel Royal provided us with an exceptional stay filled with outstanding hospitality and memorable moments. We highly recommend this hotel and look forward to returning in the future. Thank you to the entire team for making our family feel so welcome!”

“A perfect place to stay in Denmark! From the moment we arrived, everything exceeded our expectations. The room was exquisitely designed, impeccably clean, and offered breathtaking views that made our stay even more memorable. The attention to detail was exceptional, from the luxurious soaps and lotions provided to every thoughtful touch throughout the room. Breakfast was another highlight—an incredible spread featuring fresh fruit, sweet pastries, delicious hot dishes, and some of the best coffee we've had in Europe. If you're looking for a beautiful, comfortable, and unforgettable place to stay in Denmark, this hotel is truly a hidden gem. We would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it!”

“Just a great period hotel. It’s like a free art museum, the rooms are huge, staff are super attentive (especially Christian who loves his job), location is killer, best restaurants are very close by and ambiance is relaxed and lovely. Only issue is parking if you are driving. No inexpensive options so go for valet.”

“I would happily return to Hotel Royal in the fall, winter, or spring. The building is charming (the glass-domed restaurant off the the spiral stair case is a dream), and the staff is warm and attentive. Caveat: air conditioning is not as advertised. The room we paid a premium for had a non-functional unit, and when we went to the desk to report the issue, we had to wait behind guests there to discuss their own malfunctioning A/C. We were offered a credit, but the night of sleep was mostly a loss. It wasn’t an ideal experience, but enough was great that the next time we’re in Århus during a season when the probable high is 20° or less, look for us at the Hotel Royal.”

“Loved this atmospheric hotel in Aarhus. Great location and very helpful staff. Breakfast was ample, fresh, and served in an airy light-filled room. Our room was spacious and clean. Good location in center of town and walking distance from Aarhus’ wonderful museums. Note that if you have a car there is a large public parking garage a short walk from the hotel where you can park for a fraction of the valet cost. Staff will show you how to get there. Will stay here again.”
